Privacy policy

AFTRS is committed to protecting your privacy, and providing a safe and secure environment for you while you access our online content, products and services.

The aims of this policy are to tell you:

  • what information we may collect about you when you visit our site
  • how we can use that information
  • if the information is disclosed to anyone
  • what choices you have about how we use the information
  • your ability to correct this information

You can:

  • decide what and how much information to provide, and
  • control how we use that information.

We encourage you to ask us any questions or make any comments you may have about our online services.

This policy applies only to AFTRS online services and not to other companies' or organisations' web sites to which the AFTRS links.

Information collection and use

Anonymous information

When you look at this web site, our Internet Service Provider automatically makes a record of your visit and logs the following information for statistical purposes:

  • your server address
  • your top level domain name (for example .com or .gov)
  • the date and time of your visit to the site
  • the pages accessed and the documents downloaded
  • the previous site visited and the type of browser used

In addition, software for tracing visitor statistics uses cookies (a small piece of data sent to your browser from our web server and stored on your hard drive) to track user paths through the site, frequency of visits, and details of user operating systems. We do not access personal information about individuals - they retain their anonymity.

This information is used as collective statistics on how people use our site. The statistics help us plan effective online services. We may publish or make the collective statistics available to others outside the AFTRS.

No attempt will be made to identify users or their browsing activities except where the AFTRS is required by law.

Personal information

We will only record personal information if you send it to us and give us permission. This includes such specifics as name, email address, phone number or postal address. This information will only be used for the purpose for which you have provided it. For example, your details will not be added to a mailing list unless you have subscribed to that list. We will not use your personal details for any other purpose without your consent.

We may ask you about your interests and preferences, but it is up to you whether or not you respond. It is your choice as to how much personal information you provide to us.

Disclosure

There may be occasions in which it is necessary to disclose your personal information to third parties. The AFTRS may be required to do this by law, or the AFTRS may disclose your personal information to provide a service you have requested. Your personal information will only be disclosed where it is necessary to fulfil the purpose for which you provided the information. On no other occasions will we provide your personal information to any organisation or party outside the AFTRS unless we have your authority to do this. For example, if you are a member of the AFTRS Network and have requested that your contact details be made available to other Network members. Similarly, if you participate in an online seminar or forum, you may decide to publish your name and email address.

Under no circumstances will the AFTRS sell or receive payment for licensing or disclosing your personal information.

Access and correction

If the AFTRS holds your personal information, wherever possible we will give you access to that information. We will take reasonable steps to keep the information accurate and up to date, and allow self-correction wherever possible.

Interacting online with AFTRS

Interactive features of AFTRS online services include forums, chats and online courses. For Network members we provide facilities for publishing biographies, resumés and production reports.

When interacting online, whether on the AFTRS site or elsewhere on the web, be cautious about what personal information you publish.

Anything posted on publicly accessible pages is available to any person connected to the Internet. You should only post information which you are happy to share with everyone.

You are responsible for safeguarding your passwords and personal information.

The AFTRS has implemented anti-virus software, and although we take all care it is the responsibility of the recipient to ensure that all downloaded files are scanned for viruses before opening.

Security

Passwords and graded access rights as well as auditing logs are used to regulate access to private information. The AFTRS employs firewalls for the protection of its IT network. Users of the AFTRS IT network are required to agree to and abide by the AFTRS Information Technology User Policy.

Within the AFTRS, no-one, including MIT department staff, is permitted to access another person's files without the permission of that person. In certain circumstances, the Director or Head of Technology and Infrastructure may grant permission but the person concerned will be notified.

Web access to email for staff and students is encrypted. Communication between AFTRS offices is also encrypted.

Complaints

Please send any complaints about online privacy on AFTRS sites to webmaster@aftrs.edu.au. The AFTRS accepts no liability for any material or links on its online service, but we will investigate all complaints.
